Congratulations. The fun part is over. Now comes the deeply glamorous process of taking care of yourself.

Don't ruin the expensive part.

Your artist or piercer gave you specific instructions.

Follow those first.

You paid someone to put art into your skin. Maybe don't immediately declare war on it.

Tattoo aftercare.

01

Follow the wrap instructions

Leave the initial dressing or protective film in place for the amount of time your tattoo artist recommends. Different dressing products have different instructions.

02

Clean gently

Wash your hands before touching the tattoo. When your artist says it is time to clean it, use gentle care and avoid aggressive scrubbing or picking.

03

Don't pick

Flaking and peeling can happen during normal healing. Let loose skin come away naturally instead of scratching or peeling at it.

04

Protect it

Avoid unnecessary friction and follow your artist's instructions about swimming, soaking, exercise, clothing, and other activities while the tattoo heals.

Clean hands Gentle care Patience Pick the flakes

Healing is temporary. The tattoo is very much not.

Keep it looking expensive.

After Healing

Sun is not your friend.

Once the tattoo is fully healed, protecting tattooed skin from excessive ultraviolet exposure helps preserve the appearance of the work.

Use appropriate sun protection when the area is exposed and keep tattooed skin comfortably moisturized if it becomes dry.

Professional body piercing jewelry Please stop touching it.

Piercing aftercare

Hands off. Seriously.

Healing piercings generally do best with simple, consistent care. Wash your hands before touching the area, keep the jewelry in place unless a qualified professional advises otherwise, and resist the ancient human instinct to twist it every six minutes.

Your piercing does not need a seventeen-product skincare routine.

Keep piercing care boring.

01

Wash your hands

Clean hands before touching or cleaning a healing piercing. Otherwise, leave the area alone as much as practical.

02

Use sterile saline

If saline is part of your piercer's aftercare plan, use sterile wound-wash saline intended for this purpose rather than mixing a homemade salt solution.

03

Don't rotate it

The jewelry does not need to be twisted, spun, or rotated during routine cleaning. Unnecessary movement can irritate healing tissue.

04

Leave jewelry in

Do not casually remove initial jewelry during healing. If jewelry needs adjustment, downsizing, or removal, contact a qualified piercer for guidance.

Some tenderness and irritation can happen during healing. But this website cannot diagnose what is happening to your body through vibes.

Ask a professional

Don't let TikTok diagnose it.

If you are concerned about how a tattoo or piercing is healing, contact your artist or piercer promptly so they can evaluate the situation and explain what may need to change.

If you suspect an infection, have a severe reaction, feel significantly unwell, or have another urgent medical concern, seek appropriate medical care rather than relying on website aftercare instructions.

Contact the studio

Aftercare advice is useful. A diagnosis is different.

When in doubt, ask a qualified professional.
Healed already?

Uh oh.

Sounds like you have room for another one.

Tattoo healed beautifully? Piercing behaving itself? Excellent. This is exactly how people end up telling us, "Okay, but this is definitely my last one."
