Tutoring / Academic Damage Control

Let's figure out what the hell happened.

Homework help, subject tutoring, study support, and calm explanations for students whose current strategy is mostly staring at the assignment and hoping it becomes easier.

A tutor and teenage student sorting through notebooks, worksheets, a graded assignment, pencils, and a calculator during a homework-help session.

step one: open the backpack

Academic Reality Check

Tutoring is not just homework with a witness.

Sometimes the student needs help with the assignment in front of them.

Sometimes the real problem started three chapters ago, lives in a missing notebook, and has been quietly gaining strength ever since.

We work on the immediate problem while also figuring out what keeps making the same problem come back.

Session Observation / Totally Scientific

progress has been alleged

6 things the student said they understood
7 follow-up questions that proved otherwise
1 very useful tutoring session

Methodology: ask one additional question / Accuracy rate: emotionally devastating

Anatomy Of A Session

There is a plan. We promise.

Every session changes depending on the student, the subject, and whatever academic surprise arrived that afternoon.

01

What's due?

We start with assignments, upcoming tests, grades, and anything containing the phrase "I forgot to tell you."

02

What makes sense?

We separate what the student actually knows from what they confidently nodded through approximately six hours earlier.

03

What doesn't?

We slow down, explain the problem differently, work examples, and keep going until the student can explain it back without using the phrase "you know, the thing."

04

Can they do it alone?

Because the tutor will not be hiding under the desk during tomorrow's quiz.

Student Says

"I don't get any of it."

  • Let's start with problem one.
  • Which step feels weird?
  • Show me what you tried.
  • Okay, now we found it.
??

Turns out "all of it" was approximately one step.

Student Profiles / No Judgment

This might be your kid if...

Exhibit A

"I knew how to do it yesterday."

The concept made sense in class, disappeared overnight, and has not returned our calls.

Exhibit B

"I work better under pressure."

The pressure in question is usually 10:52 PM and a test scheduled for first period.

Exhibit C

"The teacher never said that."

We have reviewed the assignment sheet. The investigation remains ongoing.

The Actual Goal

Eventually, we want them to need us less.

A tutor should not become a permanent academic life-support system.

We want students to recognize what they know, notice when they are stuck, ask better questions, use strategies that work, and recover from confusion without immediately declaring the assignment impossible.

independence: suspiciously useful

A teenage student working independently through schoolwork while a tutor sits nearby observing and allowing the student to solve the problem.
Progress Note / Tutor Talking Less Look who is doing the work now. this is suspiciously promising

Next Step / Before The Next Emergency

Bring us the assignment everybody has been avoiding.

We'll start there.

Tell us the grade level, subject, current situation, and how long everybody has been pretending this is probably fine.
